Macro Monday - Love One Another

Love One Another

Love one another, but make not a bond of love.
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Fill each other's cup, but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread, but eat not from the same loaf.
Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone.
Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.
Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping.
For only the hand of life can contain your hearts.
And stand together, yet not too near together.
For the pillars of the temple stand apart.
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow.

    I have long loved these words of Gibran on gauging the right distance in love, the closeness without the intrusion, the Rilkean protection of the other's solitude. Just like the two banks of a river or two columns of a temple, neither the river or temple will continue to exist if the banks or columns are too far apart or too close together.

    Khalil Gibran...ahhhh. His poetry is true. Nice to see this piece along with your striking photographs. I may appropriate this poem and give to my husband as I think we have managed to achieve what Gibran tells us to strive for.

    You are really something! I never would have thought to find hearts in the capital ornamentation of a column. And then Gibran's poem, yes, so perfectly paired, and also strikingly like the Rilke for Valentine's Day as Lorenzo pointed out.

    Beautiful words a lovely heart images Dutchbaby! For Noelle's going away last week, I read a Khalil Gibran poem about friendship, I was looking through a lot of his work and rereading many works, including Love One Another. His words really get to me, too!
