Bouquets to Art 2011 - Contemporary Art

DSC05874 Judy Cochran Ward

Follow me downstairs to the Contemporary Art wing to view more Bouquets to Art submissions for 2011.

Judy Cochran Ward made a replica of Sono Osato's Meena with what I believe might be painted craftpaper with reclaimed objects wedged into the folds. Spring flowers and succulents burst as perfect counterpoints to the monochromatic diptych.

If you're wondering what these ladies are looking at...

... it is the back side of the arrangement.

Cochran dedicated her Bouquet to "the memory of those who lost their lives in the 9/11 tragedy, including my dear friend Lauren Grandcaulas, and represents the beauty and life of hope."

I have often been intrigued by Al Farrow's black miniature cathedral in the same room.

When Donnel Vicente chose it for Bouquet to Art this year, it commanded everyone's attention.

The unique box of nails and soft white ranunculus moved me to read the tag associated with the church.

The sculpture, named The Spine and Tooth of Santa Guerro, is a social commentary on war and religion . I had never noticed before that the church is made of bullets, pellets and deconstructed guns. The title tooth is encapsuled in the red reliquary above the transept door.

Cheryl McGuire of Flair complemented Sean Scully's Wall of Light Horizon with a reflection back to Josiah McElheny's Model for Total Reflective Abstraction.

While I appreciate the innovation and whimsy of the sculptural pieces in my previous postPhoebe Kahl's and Diana Kennedy's dynamic contribution makes my heart sing.

DSC05739 Orinda Garden Club - Girl with Towel

They truly expressed the essence of Elmer Bischoff's Girl with Towel, 1960. I adore how the kangaroo paw branches float above the rust cymbidium and white phaleonopsis orchids, while a wave of orange ribbon and green broom branches dance upward to the sky. Kahl and Kennedy delivered the type of arrangement I long to see at Bouquets to Art.

Paul Robertson Floral design cooked up a big pot of florals for Robert Colescott's A Taste of Gumbo,

  1. What a tour! The images of the delicate white flowers in the box of sharp nails makes an interesting metaphor.

  2. It would be hard to leave this exhibition, DB! In fact, before I saw your post, I had just seen Mad's here:

It was like the second blessing. :)

  4. What wonderful creations. The church sculpture is my favorite, but the 3D with the red/yellow and blue bottles is fabulous as well.

  10. WOW!! How many bouquets arrangements were featured at the Bouquets to Art 2011? Are there prizes awarded?
I like them ALL for different reasons. Phoebe Kahl and Diana Kennedy captured movement in their design.
But again all work is fun to check out!!
    Thanks so much~~

  12. Thank you for this magnificent tour! All of these pieces of art are very impressive and beautiful. Even the church made from bullets and other war material is beautiful, awsome and very impressive. It's true that religious intolerance caused and still cause ( but now with another religion) enormous sadness, unjustice and cruelty. I hope that Christians will never ever kill non Christians any more. The crusades are over. But I also hope that Christians will be able to live all over the world without being discriminated against.

  13. Hiya DB,

I can barely contain my envy at your being present at such a fabulous group of floral art exhibits.

This is mindbogglingly versatile and immensely beautiful.

You did it a great honour with your meticulous photographs and we profit by it. A wonderful set of posts.

  16. Dear Relyn,
Like Constance said on my Flickr account, the cathedral is a fantastic way to use bullets. What a work of art it became!

  21. Dear Margaret,
I particularly like how Regula used recycled materials.

I was happy to learn more about the cathedral. I've always thought it beautiful, but now I love knowing what it represents.

  22. Dear Constance,
The student flower/costume competition does give top awards, but no awards are given for this portion of the Bouquets to Art exhibit. I believe it would be near impossible and it would change the character of the show. This keeps it more pure.

  23. Dear EG Wow!
Thank you, I'm so happy you joined the tour!

  24. Beste Reader Wil,
I'm glad you enjoyed the tour. I agree that religious intolerance is highly destructive. I believe in opening doors, not closing them.
