  1. I wonder how they make the Bas Relief- do they stamp it some how?

  2. I like Covent Garden very much, and all the little streets and restaurants in that area. Whenever I am in London I always try to go there, but I had not seen that bas relief. The picture is very clear.

  4. Always amazed me- a unicorn, albeit chained, on the UK's coat of arms!

  5. It's so rich and detailed that it almost looks like embroidery on linen, don't you think?

  9. I've been there, DB, but I do NOT remember this bas relief. It's palpable. I want to trace my fingers all around it, like a blind person. :)

  10. We were in London and staying with friends in the South of England a few years ago, but had not digital camera yet - all the opportunities I missed for good pics!
    Have fun!

  13. Dear maggie,
That is an excellent question and I do not have an answer. Knowing how ultra-talented those British craftsmen are, I wouldn't be surprised if this was hand-carved.

  14. Dear Vagabonde,
I spent the morning at Covent Garden and enjoyed every minute of it. I love the little stalls with antique goods here.

Thank you for commenting on my clear picture. I have to give credit to my incredible point-and-shoot Sony Cybershot. I took my daughter's Canon Rebel to Norway and had a lot of trouble getting crystal-clear photos.

  16. Dear luluvillage,
It does make you wonder how a unicorn came to be on this coat of arms.

I was quite taken by it when I saw it. I was happy that my zoom lens was able to capture the intricacy of the carving.

  21. Dear Ginnie,
Me too! Or maybe take a giant piece of paper and create a rubbing of it.

  22. Dear margie,
I was trying to count how many lions are in this image. I think I count nine.

  23. Dear jeannette,
You'll just have to return! How lucky that you have friends in the South of England!

  24. Dear lisaschaos,
I just read that the chained unicorn symbolizes Scotland. A free unicorn is deemed to be a very dangerous beast.

  25. Dear rochambeau,
I love heraldry also and am drawn to photographing it.

It is going great; I'm happy to finally catch up on my blogging (only two weeks behind with this comment!).

I returned from a long weekend in NOLA late Monday night. We worked hard moving my daughter into her dorm room in the hot humidity, but we also had so many splendid meals with friends and family.

I hope the kitchen will be done soon. My contractor is returning from Eastern Europe in a few days. Thanks for asking.
