Sweet Baby Shower

DSC06414 dutch hydrangea

One of my book club sisters is going to be a grandma for the second time. Last Saturday she threw a beautiful shower for her daughter.

Michelle, The Roving Gourmet, dropped off the food before the guests arrived. The menu was perfect:: cold celery soup shooters, spinach salad, poached salmon, chicken salad, fruit salad. All delicious!

We ate outside in the back yard.

After lunch we were invited to decorate onesies and shirts with fabric paints.

Several guest thought that the baby would be stepping into Daddy's car-mechanic footsteps.

Then came the gifts, and there were many.  The time moved swiftly because we played Baby Bingo with cards listing possible baby gifts. With every gift someone may ask "There wouldn't be a hooter-hider in that diaper bag, would there?" or "Could that be used as a pee-pee teepee?". You wouldn't believe the cheers when a night light was finally unwrapped.

The baby will be well dressed for the World-Series-Winning San Francisco Giants ballgames.

There will be no shortage of onesies and shirts.

Baby will even have one with his Facebook page.

The afternoon ended on a sweet note.

The tiny bundt cakes were from a place called Bundtini. Super yummy!

Next time I will share with you what I brought to the shower.

And I have never seen cut hydrangeas look so lovely as in that first photo.

  2. A wonderful documentation of your beautiful shower! I just love every bit of it, the game, the onesies, the flowers (glorious), the food (!), the setting outdoors which is cozy and beautiful, just brilliant. And you know why I am especially eager to know all your details. I realized last evening that there is indeed something special when a mother's daughter has a baby, perhaps more so than when her daughter-in-law does. One of my blog friends ("Grandmother" it just so happens is her moniker) reminded me that woman has all her eggs in her womb while she is still in utero. That means that my little poppy seed, now growing in my daughter, was in me when my daughter was in my tummy! How crazy is that? No wonder I feel pregant. ;-)

  3. DB: That is one fanciful and elaborate shower. How lovely to be able to provide this for her daughter and unborn GB. I guess it's a boy? Loved my baby showers way more than my bridal. The eggs in utero Ruth brings up is something I didn't know. No wonder women are pre-programmed to conceive.

  7. I've never seen let alone been to a baby shower like this in my life, DB. OMG! How very creative and...delicious, in every way! Totally charming. :)

  8. I love it! What a fun shower. The idea for painting the onesies is great. I once gave a bridal shower and asked each guest to bring cloth napkins to hang on the line, then had a basket for the bride to take them all home in. The food and those little bundt cakes look totally delicious.

  10. I loved the little ducks and blue marbles on the table. The decoration was very pretty – the flower gorgeous. I wish I could give a shower to my daughter who is having a baby in July but she lives away and I would not know anyone there, plus she has to work to the eve of her delivery. This must have been so much fun. It was a very creative shower for sure – those onesies and shirts are unique.

Thanks for your comment. Actually we had made an itinerary. We went from Christchurch southwards and drove around the South Island from holiday park to another park where we booked a cottage beforehand!

  15. Hello there Dutchbaby!
THANK you for bringing us along too!
I so appreciate having the opportunity to see the party. Such a wonderful celebration your book club sister had honoring her daughter and her bebe to be. She has exquisite taste and a fine attention for detail.
My favorite was seeing the onesies uses like bunting and that you all got to be creative together and put your gift of love into those sweet little suits.

  17. Thanks so much for dropping by my blog the other day. While traveling in Sweden, I've had limited access to the internet and am getting by with only my iPad which is less efficient than a computer!

Stopped by to say hi and just enjoyed all the photos from the baby shower... Love the idea of decorating onesies for the new arrival and will suggest it for the next infant due in my extended family.

  18. Dear Kala,
Those hydrangeas were a variety from Holland that I had never seen before. It was just too perfect for a baby shower for a boy. And yes, we had a fantastic time!

  19. Dear Ruth,
Your announcement and your beautiful contribution this shower made this baby shower more special than ever.

I love knowing that I carried the seeds of my potential grandchildren! I look forward to the glimpses into your journey towards grandmotherhood, Ruth!

  20. Dear California Girl,
Absolutely fanciful and elaborate, yet completely relaxed - at least from a guest's point of view. Yes, it's a boy; see my next post on birth mandalas.

  21. Dear Kala,
I had never seen hydrangeas with a star-vein in the blossoms like that either. I'm sure the cultivators had to discard many other varieties before they found this glorious one.

  22. Dear Chesney,
I'm really losing it now. I intended to respond to your comment but I ended up responding to Kala a second time. Gee whiz!

The food was fantastic. It was light, flavorful, and even nutritious!

I wish I didn't botch up the onesie I painted.

  23. Dear Susan,
And smack-ou'-lips we did! Copy away; the hostess said she found these ideas on the internet. The gift-opening bingo game was also great.

  31. Lieve Reader Wil,
I love the Dutch tradition of eating "beschuit met muisjes" with the birth of a baby.

Also, thank you for posting about the Hold Hands project for the people of Oslo. It helps me remember that the vast majority of people are good.
